project brief
The goal of this project was to create sustainable packaging that emphasizes reuse and minimizes waste. I designed both the product and packaging for Modulo, a wooden stationery organizer with a built-in perpetual calendar, for individuals who value organization, functionality, and visual clarity. The packaging doubles as a decorative sleeve that transforms into wallpaper for the organizer, extending its life and purpose beyond unboxing.
process
I custom-designed the Modulo box dielines using Adobe Illustrator, going through numerous iterations to get the perfect fit. Each version was laser-cut on birch plywood. A big challenge was creating curves in the wood using kerf cuts. Calculating the exact bend radius was unpredictable, so I brute-forced it by testing different kerf widths, spacing, and patterns until I found the optimal configuration where the plywood would bend without snapping. I also experimented with 3D printed components early on, but ended up sticking with wood. After much trial and error and several prototypes, I perfected the design, which ended up differing from my initial sketches.
design elements
The Modulo box lid and the inside of the sleeve have grid patterns, inspired by the modular theme of the project. The sleeve design similarly follows a grid system, maintaining a minimal look. The percent (%) symbol in the logo is an operator that represents the modulo function in computing and math, which returns the remainder of two numbers.
